Gurgaon Metro News :- Eight years after the city last added a track to its bare-bones metro rail network, GMRL has set the ball rolling for the new line planned between Millennium City Centre and Cyber City.
The Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) last week invited bids for Phase 1 of the new line, which includes constructing a 15.2km viaduct and 14 elevated stations from Millennium City Centre to Sector 9.
Officials said on Sunday they are aiming for work to begin by May. If all goes as planned, this section of the new line will be completed by mid-2027, they said.
“We have invited bids for the construction of 14 stations under Phase 1 of the metro project. We want to expedite the process and aim to start work in May,” said Chander Shekhar Khare, managing director of GMRL.
The budget for this stage of construction is Rs 1,286 crore. Starting from Millennium City Centre, the stations on this section will be — Sector-45, Cyber Park, Sector 47, Subhash Chowk, Sector 48, Sector 33, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar 6, Sector 10, Sector 37, Basai and Sector 9. From Basai, a spur will be connected to the Dwarka Expressway at Sector 101 station.
The metro corridor will cover 28.5km and eventually connect Millennium City Centre to Cyber City with 27 stations, including the spur from Basai. The entire project is expected to cost Rs 5,452 crore.
A traffic plan
Considering Gurgaon’s heavy traffic flow, GMRL officials said they are working on a management plan to minimise disruptions to commuters. A detailed diversion strategy will be prepared in consultation with the Gurgaon traffic police.
For now, they are planning to widen roads, so that at least two lanes remain open in each direction even after an 8-meter-wide section is occupied for metro construction.
In areas where metro pillars are to be installed, existing streetlights on the median will be dismantled, and temporary lighting will be set up along the barricades.
Additionally, routes that will be used to divert traffic will be repaired and widened wherever necessary.
Temporary road decking will also be used at some sites.
“The final location survey for the 14 stations and metro alignment was completed and frozen. Our priority is to ensure minimal inconvenience to commuters during construction,” a GMRL official said.
Among the most complex sections in this phase is the construction of the viaduct at Hero Honda Chowk, where the metro line will cross NH-8. This site is challenging because there is a surface road, an underpass and a flyover — all of which already handle a high volume of traffic.
Officials said the metro viaduct will be constructed in a way that does not interfere with existing infrastructure.
“NH-8 crossing at Hero Honda Chowk is a critical part of the project, but we have factored in solutions to ensure smooth execution. The metro viaduct will be elevated above the existing flyover, and the design has been planned to avoid impacting the underpass or surface road traffic,” a second GMRL official said. Officials had earlier said the entire metro corridor will take four years to be completed.
